Product Details

The Nature of Two-Dimensional Polygons (2013), for solo Horn in F was composed for Emma Staudacher, and premiered at Ithaca College in 2013. It spans three movements, and totals around 10 minutes in length.

Thematically, this work is inspired by the book Flatland by Edwin Abbott Abbott, a satirical commentary on social hierarchy in Victorian culture. The book's fictional worlds exists in a two-dimensional space, in which the more sides a polygon has, the higher their class, with triangles being among the lowest, working class, squares being more privileged, and circles representing high class clergy, academics, etc. The three movements of this piece are entitled, "Angular Anthem," "Circle Song," and "Quadrilaterondo," representing the experience a being of each shape may have in such a world.
